Children with disabilities have new fears.

CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES HAVE NEW FEARS.
The parents of Katie Thorpe, aged 15. who has cerebral palsy want her to have a hysterectomy even though there are no medical reasons for this major surgery.
I believe that any child born with a disability very soon faces the reality that he/she is different from their peers. This is exactly how I felt, and still do at times. To perform a major operation on a young woman just to prevent her developing into womanhood, to make her personal care more manageable is unthinkable. I am pleased the medical profession in the U.K. has refused to carry out this procedure because there are no medical grounds for it.
Katie’s parents in making this request and therefore drawn much attention from the media; have made their daughter’s situation very public at a very sensitive age. I am fearful that her parents will take Katie abroad for this operation. I hope other parents will not want to take this extreme action.
The charity Scope advocates:
‘Human Rights for all.’
They say on their website:
"Our stance on this is supported by Article 23 (c) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which says:
"Parties shall take effective and appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against persons with disabilities in all matters relating to marriage, family, parenthood and relationships, on an equal basis with others, so as to ensure that: (inter alia)
… Persons with disabilities, including children, retain their fertility on an equal basis with others."
Although the Treaty was signed on 30th March 2007, the UK Government has yet to ratify the convention.
If we really want everyone in this country to have the same human rights, we need the Government to ratify this treaty.
To make this happen we urge you to sign the online petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ratifyconvention/
